Basically if I go into the console and click the surround right speaker the sound will come from the front right, and the surround left comes through the front left. So basically all audio comes out of the front speakers output. Sound comes through the front speakers as normal when the respective L/R speaker icon is selected in the console.

Use Windows audio control dialogs. No updated driver, no realtek audio console, no nahimic. No problems. Limited functionality? Perhaps, but not that I notice. ie I can still set-up things like jack switching, audio effects, defaults, and so on. "Enhanced" control apps basically duplicate a lot of functionality that windows already provides.
Sound cards are more likely to be noisy, have interference, and introduce latency than the built-in audio. If your motherboard sound is noisy then go with a USB sound or USB DAC solution. If you need the additional inputs for your setup, bought really high impedance headphones (>80ohm) for some unknown reason, or there's noisy audio coming out
